Did you know that there is a 222 lying somewhere in Trondheimsfjorden,Norway, where it was sunk after the war? It is not yet found though, and is believed to be lying at approx. 180-250 metres, so a rescue would be quite difficult I guess.

One other flying boat lying in Trondheimsfjorden though, is a Short Sunderland. Seemingly in good condition too, lying on the seabed at approx. 65 metres. Check out the links:
http://www.adressa.no/nyheter/articl...ticleID=445464

http://www.trondheim-politidistrikt....etalj.asp?id=6

In Trondheimsfjorden there are both allied and axis wrecks, in various conditions. There are roughly between 30 and 50 planes lying there.

Best regards, Baard

I'm compiling information on museums with Axis WW2 equipment on my site, the Axis History Factbook at http://www.axishistory.com , and I'd appreciate any help with additions (text or photos) or corrections to the material.

The museums section can be found at http://www.axishistory.com/?id=56

Thanks.

He111 Jonsvatnet information
Sun Sep 5, 2024 01:54
158.36.180.35

Hello,
Some information forwarded from Guttorm Fjeldstad regarding the He111h (unknown subtype, all plates shows only "H" and no subtype.)

Some info about the components:

Left wing : Heinkelbuilt 9.8.39.
Right wing: Aradobuilt ?.?.??.
Forward fuselage: Aradobuilt 7.1.39. (Wnr. 2320)
Back fuselage: Aradobuilt 6.7.38 (Wnr. ????)

Regarding the interior:
Cockpit mostly salvaged by the Germans, all radio and most of the cockpit equipment is gone, only small parts is left, including parts of the left side console. This also includes the bomb bay. According to Casmir a whole Ju52 was filled up with cannibalised parts from the He111H now saved. The Pilot seat and the stearing stick (both made of magnesium) are almost gone because of corrosion. There are some bullet holes in the fuselage (don't know where!) most probably from one of the attacks.

Any other questions can be mailed to Guttorm ( g.fjeldstad@sensewave.com ) But understandably enough he can not answer them for the next few days, because he's on a barge on Lake Jonsvatnet!

Tormod Christiansen

Thanks, Morten, a great series of photos of both the He111 and Ju88 recoveries. I find it surprising that the paint-work has survived so well.
I don't read Norwegian, but I assume that references to magnesium in the captions mean the corrosion shown is on magnesium alloys?

Thanks again,

Tony

Yes, thats correct. As you see on some of the pictures, whats left over from most magnesium alloy parts is a kind of whitish stuff.

Yes, and that is quite normal, even with recoveries made on land the magnesium parts are often totally corroded to white pulp.

JU88 From Lake Jonsvatnet?
Thu Sep 23, 2024 12:04
80.41.17.122

Hi,
I have been following with great interest the recent recoveries, from Lake Jonsvatnet, Norway.
Heinkel 111 from KG100, and the two Junkers 88's from KG30, have sure been great to see after 64 years resting in the murky depths of the lake.

I am intrigued by the codes of one of the JU88's, this being W.nr 0880119 and U4+TK. Can anybody offer any information as to why this KG30 a/c is wearing these codes?
usually KG30 aircraft were coded 4D+
If anybody can shed any light on this, id be most grateful.

RGS,
Steve.

The following is in response to an Fi 156 photo posted on eBay and noted on 12 O'Clock High!:

Post-war Storch is Finnish AF ST-112, photo at least 10-times overpriced! This Storch served in FAF until spring 1960, then in Finnish civil register as OH-VSF and OH-FSA. Currently on display in Finnish Avaition Museum at Helsinki-Vantaa airport (with civil reg).
