The same image is featured within the pages of several well known books on the Luftwaffe. "German Aircraft of the Second World War" says that "Fuel drop tanks for both aircraft can clearly be seen"... whilst "Focke-Wulf Fw190 in Combat" points out that This was also most certainly one of the aircraft intended for the Eisenhammer Operation with the large 1200-l (264 imp-gal) drop-tank mounted under the fighter. No mention is made of the tank below the Ju88... I agree that it does look a strange shape for a drop-tank though...

cheers

Re: Ju 390

(Translated) quote from Nowarra, "Die deutsche Luftrüstung 1933 - 1945":
"Flugkapitän Hans Pancherz, who was first to have flown Ju 390 V-1, GH+UK, after the war gave a lecture in Denmark about his activity in the war. He explained, that the Ju 390 V-1 which he has flown, had been the only Ju 390. This was an error, because from the Flugbuch of Oberleutnant Eisermann of Erprobungsstelle Rechlin it can be taken, that he has flown the Ju 390 V-2 from Rechlin to Lärz without markings. The flight took place on 3. February 1945. Flights with the Ju 390 to Japan, which often have been reported, never happened. For the socalled "Kommando Japan", which also was not carried out, only Ju 290 were provided."
BTW, Nowarra shows just the same picture of the Ju 390, which now is to be sold at Ebay. Absolutely original

Robert

Nowarra's books are definitely not a recommended source of information on Luftwaffe aircraft - they are usually a mixture of facts & fantasy, inscrutably mixed.

If you compare, for example, what Nowarra - without giving any sources - states e.g. on the Junkers Ju 388 with the well-backed up facts given in Martin Handig's and my book, see

http://www.ju388.de/388Buch.html (German)
http://www.ju388.de/388Buch_US.html (English)

you will see what I am talking about. No book is completely free of errors, of course, see e.g. the Ju 390 fake photo (I checked - it's a different one from the one currently offered on ebay, sorry!) in the chapter on license negotiations with Japan. But it does matter whether you do accurate research or not.

Unfortunately, many people simply copied the stuff written by Nowarra, translated it to English and repeated it in numerous other books, and finally, Nowarra's Luftwaffe fairy tales found their way into the free encyclopedias of the internet...

Regarding the existence of the Ju 390 V2, please refer to Koessler/Ott (I don't have the book at hand now). If I remember correctly, the "V2" in Eisermann's log is an error. Such things happened quite often, and if you take into account the conditions under which pilots flew in early 1945, you will easily understand why.

Kössler/Ott does not say that the entry in Eisermanns Flugbuch is an error. They do however discuss the pro and cons about the existence of the V-2!!

Hi George,

This one has been out for a while. I'm sure Christian Schmidt either has it or could get it for you. It is on my massive "to buy" list.

That book

Except for its being listed at the Podzun Pallas web site, I'm having trouble finding it too. I was hoping to find a photo of the cover at least. In any case, according to a brief note I made, the book concerns the discovery of an authentic document that gives information about the late summer of 1944, and "all aircraft used at that time."

I distinctly remember getting a catalog from Christian Schmidt about 6 months ago that gave a small amount of information in English, but I can't recall the page count or information about photos in the book. I would suggest contacting Christian Schmidt and asking. I've had good communications with them.

Ed

About that book
Sat Aug 28, 2024 23:47
134.117.137.203

I tried Christian Schmidt's web site with no success. ...

The book apparently has 96 pages, size A4, 170 illustrations, and the cover shows a coloured photo of a lineup of 109C/Ds -- which is somewhat strange since this is supposed to be about aircraft in late-summer 1944.

If you do contact them, Ed, I'd like to hear what they have to say.

All the best,
George

Type documents
Sun Aug 29, 2024 13:12

Research has turned up RLM documents, which are compilations of single page descriptions of 8-Nummer aircraft, including both production versions and prototypes. These are single page descriptions with a three view, basic dimensions and other information in an abbreviated form (no photographs). It sounds like the Griehl book might be based on this material. They are interesting, but do not contain much information that can't be found in more detail elsewhere. IIRC, the Me 262 sheet I saw was based on a very early concept and did not represent the actual configuration accurately.

Best regards

Hi Everyone

Has anyone ever seen pictures or any information on two projects to design a better the Hs 129 type ground-attack aircraft by

1. Putting the Hs 129 cockpit on Ju 188 airframe with 2 x Jumo 222 engines

and (falling off my chair )

2. Putting the Hs 129 cockpit Go 229 with 1 x Jumo 213 engine in pusher configuration.

Oil bombs
Fri Dec 10, 2024 23:51
211.27.13.189

Hi everybody
Can somebody please tell me what type of Luftwaffe bombs these were please.
The diary entry below was written by 450 Squadron RAAF groundstaff Fitter at Gambut 'drome, Libya, 1st June 1942

'Jerry was over early this morning, ground strafing and bombing, but he seems to be a hell of a bad shot with his bombs going over the escarpment. In the gully is mass of holes. Some of them are where the oil bombs landed, and they set fire to anything in the vicinity of 50 to 100yds.'

Other diary descriptions list oil bombs through June and July 1942.
They appear to be some sort of imflammable bomb or incendiary.
Thanks for any help
Doug

The Flam C 250 and 500, and possibly the Strbd C 500. Another possibility might be the Brand C 250.

Hi Richard,

I noticed the comments above that Kossler and Ott believe that ObLt Joachim Eisserman's log book must be in error recording a flight in Ju-390V2.

Eisserman recorded two Ju-390V2 flights on 9 February 1945 at Reichlin. First a 50 minute familiarisation flight and the second a 20 minute ferry flight to Larz. Members of the disbanded FAGr.5 unit were at Larz barely a week later and testified to an Allied investigation commission that the Ju-390 was no longer at Larz the following week.

I point out that as a reference guide, "Die Grosen Dessauer: Junkers Ju-89, 90, 290, 390" by Karl Kossler and Gunter Ott, is itself in error.

RLM originally let a contract in 1942 for three Ju-390 prototypes. Ju-90V6, Ju-90V9 and Ju-90V10 apparently became donor airframes for conversion to Ju-390 prototypes.

Kossler and Ott claim that the V2 could not have been completed before September/October 1944, yet themselves make an error by forgetting the RLM prototype contract was canceled in May 1944 when all production switched to emergency production of fighters.

There are two Ju-390 depicted in flight in photographs, with Luftwaffe codes GH+UK and RC+DA. Some suggest that RC+DA must be a fake photo touch up, but then that does not explain different dimensions of both aircraft as are obvious from these pictures:

(side by side comparison with RC+DA flipped horizontal)

(obvious differences on RC+DA)

(obvious differences on GH+UK)
