The colors red white and black being those of the 2nd German Reich. Of course the Luftwaffe was the essential Nazi arm of the regular armed forces. It did not carry the old traditions and was to be new and fresh, just like the Nazi government that created it (the army always remained Prussian in tradition, the Navy had strong Imperial ties, what remained was the new Luftwaffe).
