Phonetic Alphabets (Alpha Bravo etc), by Brian Kelk
From 12 O'Clock High!:
TonyC Phonetic alphabet Sun Mar 14 17:00:48 2024 62.252.64.11 I have wondered for a while about the use of the phonetic alphabet for nick-naming, for example, the Bf109G as "Gustav", and Bf109E, "Emil", etc. I found this listing for WW2 German usage: Anton Berta Caesar Dora Emil Friedrich Gustav Heinrich Ida Josef Konrad/Kurfurst Ludwig Martha Nordpol Otto Paula Quelle Richard Siegfried Toni Ulrich Viktor Wilhelm Xantippe Ypern Zeppelin (B-Bruno and F-Fritz were used in aircraft designations. Any comments welcome There are other national variants and historical variations on http://www.columbia.edu/~fuat/cuarc/phonetic.html (Brian's webpage is a huge compendium of phonetic alphabets. Regards, Richard) |
