Can anyone help me indentifying the units to wich the following German aviators belonged.

Süszman, Gerhard, died May/June 1940, Born 9-11-1907
Reuboldt, Friedel,died June/July 1940
Dombrowski, Albert, died July 1940
Jendricke, Ernst,died August 1940, born 14-1-1916
Angarmair, Alexander, died August 1940, born 1-5-15
Kowatch, Johann, died November/December 1940
Diesselhorst, Walter, died June/July 1942, born 3-7-1912.
Heilig, B, died 1942, unsure if he was from the luftwaffe

All their planes came down in the North Sea

I tried using www.volksbund.de , but my knowledge of the german laguage is insufficient to make it work.

Werknumber and other information would also be most welcome.

Volksbund.de only gives you the site of the grave.
Some of your airmen are in the database, but
they don't mention the units.

It would be easier if you say where this list is coming from.

Volksbund is not so hard to use, go directly to
http://www.volksbund.de/graebersuche/content_suche.asp

and then:
Nachname = family name (at least 3 characters)
Vorname = first name
Geburtsdatum = birthday
Todes-/Vermisstendatum = date of death or disappearance
Geburtsort = birthplace

For use of date you can search by using the following formats:
day (ex: 1.9.1939)
month (ex: 9.1939)
or year (ex: 1939)

The problem is that the base is incomplete. Most people buried are here and also the U-boote crew and men missing on the East Front, because they are listed on memorials.

My own research shows that you will find here none of the aircrew missing in North Sea in 39-40 and whose body was never found.

The other problem is that the death date noted may be the date of burial, or when the body was found on a beach, and not the real date of death.


Of you list, I find in the base:
Unteroffizier Dombrowski, Albert, died 12 July 1940, buried Ysselsteyn (Niederlande)
Several bombers lost this day: may be of II./KG 2 or II./KG 53 (other crew given in The Blitz then and now vol 1 and no Dombrowski in them)

Unteroffizier Jendricke, Ernst, died 29 July 1940, buried Ysselsteyn (Niederlande)
Unteroffizier Angermair (not Angarmair), Alexander, died 29 July 1940, buried Ysselsteyn (Niederlande)

Crew lost these days belong to 1(F)/122, 7./KG 4, I./KG 53, III./KG 53, 4./KG 76, III./KG 76 or 11./LG 1....

Oberleutnant Diesselhorst, Walter, born 13.07.1912, died 30 March 1942, buried Ysselsteyn (Niederlande)

May be a crew of the Ju88 of 1./Küstenfliegergruppe 106 lost duirng the night of 29-30.

Gefreiter Heilig, Berno, died 19 October 1942, buried Ysselsteyn (Niederlande)

On this date, a Ju88 from 6./KG 6 was lost (together with two other of 4./KG 6 and 3(F)/33 whose crew I know).
At this date, few Gefreiter fly in operations with the Luftwaffe, the minimum grade was often Uffz.

Hello Laurent,

All these Luftwaffe crewman washed up on the beach of the village where I grew up. The information comes from "Noordwijk in de jaren 1940-1945" by G. Slats.
I have been able to indentify the aircraft of the British airman, but the German planes have eluded me.

One more question on the volksbund site; when I klick on the search button I get a sort of questionaire. Do I have to fill that in before I get an answer.

Yes, you must fill this form before your first inquiry. It's totally free, you will just receive a mail (real mail) describing the Volksbund activity and asking for voluntary financial support.

If all these airmen were washed on the coast, they should be buried somewhere, so appear in the Volksbund list. Some are missing, so :
1) maybe names are wrong
2) they were asked by the family and buried in Germany in "private" cemetery, so no more on Volksbund lists

If you are living in Netherlands, you can contact directly the cemetery of Ysselsteyn. Maybe they have more info.

Dennis, all German soldiers washed ashore in Noordwijk were buried in The Hague. If you check the records in The Hague you will find the information on the reburials in Ysselsteyn. At least 6 of the men you mentioned rest in Ysselsteyn.

Hello Dennis, all were buried initially at the Algemene Begraafplaats Kerkhoflaan and reburied at Ysselsteyn in mid 1948. Copies of the "Overbrengingsrapporten" (reports of reburial) should be available at the archives of the city of Den Haag (gemeentearchief).

Thank’s for the help.
I found some more info on Oblt Diesselhorst in “Defending the Reich” by Mombeek.
30.03.42, Oblt Walter Diesselhorst, 5 staffel, killed, Bf109F-4/Z, 100%, Crashed into the sea, North-north-east of Nordwijk.

He washed up on the shore 11-7-1942 so probably his body was trapped the wreck for over three months.

Shot down at 08.40 hrs local time by the Hurricane of P/O John Laurance Bickerdike of 85 Squadron into the North Sea near Margate.

Crew:
FF Uffz Rudolf Franke (22) Erk 65115/19
His body washed ashore on 29th July 1940 at 6 o'clock at the beach near Castricum aan Zee. On his body a identitydisc, an Ausweiss, an envelope, a pencil box, a wallet, a bundle of keys and a comb was found. He was buried on 31th July at the cemetery of Bergen.

BO Fw Georg Freitag (24) Erk 65115/22
His body washed ashore on 30th July 1940 near Bergen aan Zee. He was buried with Mae West and pistol also on July 31st at the cemetery of Bergen.

BF Uffz Albert Dombrowski (22)

BM Fw Paul Krink
BS Gefr Wilhelm Ledl

The last two crew members are still missing in action.

Do you have perhaps more details about Uffz Dombrowski, e.g. when his body was found and buried?

At this moment I only have the date on which dombrowski was found; July 31st 1940. On that same day three British bodies were also recovered.
