I know, that the Hungarian and Finnish fighters had several observer balloon claims during the WW II. Anybody knows Luftwaffe claims against this obsolete weapon? If they had, when was the last German claim?

Thx Laurent. Interesting, that the Hungarian fighters claimed two ballons in late 1944 -the Soviets tried to observe the Hungarian defence lines in Carpathian Mountains with this obsolete weapon.

Hello Rene,

Except for Nick Beale's info, I would advise you to read Wolfgang Späte's account of JG 54; use the Bundesarchiv/Militärarchiv microfilm C 2024 N-2 (this one contains many Luftwaffe claims of Market Garden); check volume 2 of G.Zwanenburg's book "En nooit was het stil" etc.
I don't want to scare you off but you first have to do a lot of research before you even can think of putting that info on the net. Much has be published already... Good luck!

I recently asked for information about the pilot who shot down Lancaster ND 355. Apparently, the victory was claimed by Feldwebel Schneider from 1./NJG 3 therefore, has anybody got any information on this pilot.

It's probably Gottfried Schneider, who survived the war with 20 victories.

I have 13 victories for an Uffz Schneider with 3./NJG 3 from march to 13th August 1944, then 5 victories for a Fw. Schneider on 26 and 30 August with 1./NJG 3. I guess it was the same man, as there are no other known ace named Schneider in NJG 3 (AFAIK) but the more I learn about Luftwaffe, the more aces I discover so I'm less sure than I was some time ago.

I am trying to find more about this man. It may well be he is (was - he passed away about a year ago) my maternal grandfather. Maddeningly, either for lack of interest or a form of post-war denial, my mother never spoke to me about her father's war record (*) and I only met him twice in my life, as I live in Australia.

The Schneider I’m looking for shot down 635 Sqn Lancaster ND 355 on the 26th August 1944 which was raiding Kiel.

Do your records show that kill?

Likewise, he had two other kills that day, have you got any details of the other aircraft he shot down?

Gottfried Schneider scored three night this same night, all four-engined bombers, in the right place and time to be against the Kiel raiders (raid against Königsberg flew more north over Denmark)

There were a few more night fighter units that operated over Schleswig-Holstein that night.

I do not think that it is impossible to reconstruct 'who shot who' in some cases.

The following book will help you with the Ln.-Funkmeßanlagen (radar installations):

Hoffmann, Karl Otto, "Ln: Die Geschichte der Luftnachrichtentruppe", 3 Bde (Neckargemünd, 1965-73).

IIRC, Hoffmann has 3 or 4 pages devoted to the role played by the radar set up around Dieppe at the time of the raid on 19 August.

For the Flakartillerie, I suggest you use the Michael Holm website ( www.ww2.dk ) and go through the Flak units one by one until you have identified those around Dieppe. The only alternative would be to go to BA-MA Freiburg and check out the Flak Lagekarten in Signatur RL 40/Kart. Of the 128 Allied aircraft claimed shot down by the Germans during the Dieppe raid, 20 of these were claimed by Flak. The specific claims made by the individual Flak batteries can be found in the "Claims" microfilm. That's the same microfilm rolls used by Tony Woods. The difference is that Tony W. only extracted the fighter claims and ignored the Flak claims which are to be found on the same pages in the microfilm.
