From 12 O'Clock High!:
Colin Fuller colinf@sagric.com.au Getting information from Bundesarchiv Wed Sep 11 03:31:21 2024 203.37.97.18 I have the award documents, badges and medals of a Luftwaffe pilot officer of III./JG 54. Having done a fair bit of research on him already, I also managed to locate his wife who kindly provided me with a letter providing permission to get copies of his records from Bundesarchiv. Bundesarchiv came back with a very brief letter outlining a list of his awards and dates received, in other words absolutely nothing I do not already know. Shouldn't there be more comprehensive documentation on his service with the Luftwaffe, and if so why is it so hard to get copies of these, bearing in mind that I have permission from his widow? So far all attempts to get information, not only with this pilot, but others have proved fruitless - is there something I don't know? Any insights would be much appreciated. Regards Colin |

Ruy Horta Re: Getting information from Bundesarchiv Wed Sep 11 08:18:20 2024 194.109.243.112 As far as I can tell from indirect experience, the best way to obtain good material at the BA is going there. Unfortunately the people I work with are studying a entirely different field so I cannot be of any real help. Ruy |

Bernd Barbas III / JG 54 personal data Wed Sep 11 15:26:45 2024 194.45.48.11 Hello Colin , a ) Bundesarchiv can only send you what they have . b ) Who in Bundesarchiv should find " all " things about you are looking for . BA is not an Excel file . You have to look , the problem is mainly where . c ) Personal files you can get from BA Aachen , about 15 - 20 EUR . d ) We have here in germany a totally stupid data protection law , this avoids any info about every - one . e ) Actually you dont need not only a letter from the widow , you need a formal permission of the widow signed by the notary . f ) Who is the pilot , what do you want to know and for what ? |

Steve Coates III / JG 54 personal data Wed Sep 11 20:23:28 2024 213.122.254.232 The Luftwaffe personnel files held at the BA-ZNS at Kornelimuenster (BA - Aachen) can vary greatly in content. It is my experience that the staff working there will send you what they have. I've not known them to operate a policy of selectivity. |

Bobbie Locating widow Fri Sep 13 21:37:17 2024 152.163.189.235 Hi Colin: How were you able to trace this particular pilot's widow? How can you find out if a particular pilot's family survived the war and if they are still living? I'd appreciate any answer. Thanks! Bobbie |

Colin Fuller Locating Widow Mon Sep 16 00:35:50 2024 203.37.97.18 Hi Bobbie Hopefully I can help, but one must remember that a families privacy is paramount in these situations, so it pays to tread carefully. With this in mind I would contact Gemeinshaft der Luftwaffe Jagdflieger, they are usually very helpful and will put your request to contact family, in their newsletter called Jagerblatt. Family or pilot colleagues who want to contact you, will by choice. This is where I have been successful. Their address is Gemeinshaft der Luftwaffe Jagdflieger Vereinigung der Flieger Deutscher Streitkrafte e.V. Willi Gobel Krahwinkeler Strasse 34A D-53797 Lohmar Germany. |
