Denes Bernad On-line Official Archives Sun Jun 7 10:04:45 1998 Did anyone of you successfully "penetrate" the official on-line archives of countries, where material on the Luftwaffe might exist? I searched the Web-pages of the PRO in England and the Bundesarchiv in Germany, but both of them are very sketchy, don't have (or at least I couldn't find) any photos or substantial information available on-line. Any other web-sites I might try? Any further thoughts? Denes |

I visited the AWM website. There are some Luftwaffe related photos, motion picture film, and private records.
Perhaps most interesting though, is that they have a collection of loss records, including some for 1944. Of 39 captured Luftwaffe documents, the following 18 are on Luftwaffe losses: Luftwaffe Losses - Defence of the Reich (Luftwaffe Befehlshaber Mitte) 1 June - 31 August 1943 Luftwaffe Losses in the Area of Luftflotte Reich, 1 September - 31 December 1943 Luftwaffe Losses in the Area of Luftflotte Reich, January - April 1944 Luftwaffe Losses in the Area of Luftflotte Reich - May 1944, Issued by the Air Ministry AHB6, May 1954 Luftwaffe Losses in the Area of Luftflotte Reich, June 1944 Luftwaffe Losses in the Area of Luftflotte Reich, September 1944 Luftwaffe Losses in the Area of Luftflotte Reich, October - November 1944 Luftwaffe Losses on the Western Front (Luftflotte 3), 1 September - 31 December 1943 Luftwaffe Losses on the Western Front (Luftflotte 3), 1 January - 30 April 1944 Luftwaffe Losses on the Western Front (Luftflotte 3), May 1944 Luftwaffe Losses on the Western Front (Luftflotte 3), June 1944 Luftwaffe Losses on the Western Front (Luftflotte 3), 1 July - 31 August 1944 Luftwaffe Losses on the Western Front (Luftflotte 3) (renamed Luftwaffe Komando West on 20 September 1944), 1 September - 30 November 1944 Luftwaffe Losses on the Eastern Front, 1 September - 31 December 1943 Luftwaffe Losses in Western Norway (Luftflotte 5 West) 1 September - 31 December 1943 Luftwaffe Losses in Norway, (Luftflotte 5 West), 1 July - 30 November 1944 Luftwaffe Losses in the Mediterranean, 1 September - 31 December 1943 Luftwaffe Losses in the Mediterranean (Luftflotte 2 and Luftwaffe Kommando Sud - Ost), 1 July - 30 November 1944 I tried to see what might be in these reports, but the one I attempted this on really gave no insight as to the contents. Whether these are some of the missing 1944 loss lists will have to await someone actually getting their eyes on them or someone knowing what these are up front. Five days after the initial thread on 12 O'clock High! was initiated, a new thread, which follows, was begun on the same subject:
Andreas Brekken Lots of Luftwaffe photographs online Fri Jun 12 07:21:29 1998 Hi. I recently discovered the services of the Australian War Memorial. They have a lot of Luftwaffe related photographs available online. My simple search for Luftwaffe in the 1939-1945 conflict returned approx. 32000 results. Interesting ones too, especially (of the few I have seen yet) the ones from Denmark (Grove airfield). Andreas visit them at: http://www.awm.gov.au/ |

Steve Brauning A.W.M. photo search Sun Jun 14 22:46:17 1998 Awesome! For my search I just typed in luftwaffe messerschmitt dornier focke+wulf heinkel It returned over 32,000 responses! Now I just have to find time to look through them. I skimmed about 40: 1 had only seen maybe 5 previously anywhere. Thanks for the lead on the site! Steve B |

Alan Scheckenbach AWM search engine Mon Jun 15 19:22:39 1998 Steve Don't get to excited. There is problem with the search engine. You have to basically close the engine everytime you want to do a new search as it seems to have a few bugs other wise you get the 32,000 records return. In its defence, it does usually give the more relevant photos first. For those interested, there are some interesting ones of the 262 being stored and also dismantled here at RAAF Fairbairn (Canberra) in the 1950s. As in guns out and on a pallet. Also some reasonable ones of exhaust scorches on airfields. ALan |

Phil Weaver AWM Web site Mon Jun 15 06:36:03 1998 As an Australian I was very be pleased to be directed to the AWM web site. However, as a note of caution I think that you might find that the number of german aircraft photos is fairly limited. Anyway that was my experience, so if I am incorrect please let me know, regards Phil Weaver |

I received from Ben Evans of the Australian War Memorial more complete details of the 39 Luftwaffe related files at the AWM (see message above with 18 titles listed). This information can be accessed at:
http://lwag.org/reference/awm001.pdf and http://lwag.org/reference/awm002.pdf You will need Acrobat Reader to view this information. Acrobat Reader can be downloaded for free from: http://www.adobe.com Regards, Richard |

Greetings all
Just a quick note on the records that Richard kindly posted up for me. As Richard notes, some of the records are duplicates of the loss listings he has previously posted - but there are some other goodies held by the Australian War Memorial as well. The Memorial's offical records (which includes those posted) are physically held at the Memorial, but are catalogued electronically through the National Archives of Australia. So, if you have trouble getting the Memorial's site up (www.awm.gov.au), try the Archives site: www.naa.gov.au Cheers Ben. |

Member Philippe Gravez was kind enough to supply us with a partial listing of documents in PRO AIR 20/7700-7712 of translations from captured enemy documents of the German (or enemy) air offensive against Great Britain. The list, which I have converted into .pdf format, can be viewed at:
http://lwag.org/reference/AR207700.pdf To read it, you must have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. If you don't have it, it can be downloaded for free from http://www.adobe.com . I forwarded a copy of Philippe's list to Andrew Arthy, who provided the following observation: "Thanks very much for the PRO AIR 20/7700-7712 document. These PRO records are obviously the same as those in the AWM 423/4/103 series. I'm actually about to order four more of these documents from the AWM." Thank you Philippe and Andrew.
