S-55 Boat Plane
This was the flagship of the Italian AF and was based at Orbetello. It was the main aircraft used in the large formation flights to South American led by Pineda and for the flight of 24 Savoias to the Chicago World's Fair in 1933 led by Italo Balbo. The 24 twin hulled flying boats arrived in formation over the Chicago Fair on the shore of Lake Michigan at shortly after noon on July 15, 1933. Pictures of the aircraft and formations are in the book Seawings by Edward Jablonski. published by Doubleday in 1972. The development of the aircraft and the Italian AF is partially described in the book "Italo Balbo" by Clauio Segre, U. of California Press.
