The following information from Rabe Anton, which was posted in a thread on 12 O'Clock High!, tells more about the American Battle Monuments Commission and its website. The commission provides information on all deceased servicemen buried overseas.

Lt. Col. Joseph Morris

It appears that there is no Missing Aircrew Report (MACR) for this loss. You may confirm this, however, by contacting the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Archives II - College Park, Maryland to seek a determination of holdings. The NARA holds a card file index to MACRs by individual names which is not available elsewhere. See the NARA web site for contact information.

You can check the American Battle Monuments Commission worldwide web site at www.abmc.gov (not today, which is a federal holiday!) and then go to the ABMC list of World War II casualties that were buried overseas. If Lt. Col. Morris's name does not appear on the ABMC web site, his remains were returned to the U.S. for burial.

Finally, and most importantly, you should request a copy of the Colonel's Individual Deceased Personnel File ("293 file") from the Total Army Personnel Command:

This information is made available under the Freedom of Information Act [FOIA]. To get a copy of an Army IDPF, send a letter to:

FOIA OFFICER, Department of the Army
ADMIN Section, ATTN: TAP-ALP-A (FOIA)
DCS Personnel & Logistics
200 Stovall St, Alexandria VA 22332-0405

and simply state something like "This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act, 5 U.S.C. Sec 552, for the Individual Deceased Personnel File of ..." and give the name of the casualty. You should include name, service no. etc., DOB and date of casualty.
