He was supposedly transferred to Canada as a POW.
Oberleutnant and Staffelkapitän Helmut Tiedemann of II./JG3 was shot down in Kent, near Leeds Castle on 18 August 1940. He crashlanded his plane and he was able to escape to the coast. He was trying to cross the Channel with a small boat. But 12 hours after he was shot down, he gave himself up. I know he survived the war but where was he sent to? What did he do after the war? Is there any photograph of him? I know there are some photographs online of his crashed plane. He flew a BF109-E, "black 13". When did he pass away or is he still alive? etc. Any information would be gratefull. Hope anyone can help because I've hit a brick wall. Back in the 80s he gave some of his medals to my grandfather and told him to give it to me. Tiedmann was a salesman at that time. But my grandfather doesn't know which firm anymore. My grandad is almost 90 so he forgot a lot. Here's a link to my facebook album, you can open it, even if you aren't a fb member. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...3&l=6baa19bc92 ![]() |
