Need to validate JU88 attack on Stirling - Dry Drayton 3 May 1941
Hi All
This is my first post so it's probably in the wrong place! I know that Stirling Bomber N6012 based at Oakington crash landed at Dry Drayton at 02:30 on the 3rd May 1941. The story goes that it was attacked in some way by a JU88 which may of course be true. What I would like to do is to get more detail of the attack and actually confirm that it is recorded somewhere on the German side and so confirm that the Stirling was damaged in some way (or not). The Stirling would have been on the right sort of approach to land at Oakington but was too low - that could of course have been pilot error. The local rumour at the time was that some lights were visible in the local Rectory. So it would be nice to confirm things. I am looking into the crash of the Stirling as it almost killed my Mother who was an evacuee at the time, it may be that I am here because of a single tree was in the right place. I have some photos of the crash site and my Mothers testimony for the tree! Also - would like to know if anyone has a good 1940's aerial photo of the area. I have paid and downloaded one from well known site but the level of quality is poor! Many Thanks James |
